Edmond Brown Jr., 39, who was shot by a Haddon Township officer on October 29, 2016, pled guilty August 22, 2017, to one count of second degree Eluding and one count of second degree Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon.
Under the terms of the plea agreement reached by Assistant Prosecutor Nevan Soumilas, Edmond Brown Jr. will be sentenced to 7 years in New Jersey State prison. He will be required to serve at least 5 years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
These charges arise from an incident where Edmond Brown Jr. gave a false name to the Haddon Township police officer during a routine motor vehicle stop and refused to comply with the officer’s commands. Instead of turning off his pickup truck while his identity was being verified, the defendant attempted to flee by accelerating and dragging the officer along with him while he held onto the vehicle. The officer managed to escape injury by jumping off of Brown’s vehicle before he struck a parked car on the opposite side of the road.
Again, the defendant did not comply with the officer’s orders to get down on the ground after he exited his vehicle. Instead, when Brown exited the pickup truck he started to run. The officer pursued him, a struggle ensued and the Haddon Township officer shot Brown when he attempted to reach for the gun.
Brown was treated for his injury and released the same day as the shooting by a local hospital.
After Edmond Brown’s arrest, the above charges were filed as a result of a search warrant obtained by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office for the pickup truck involved in the incident. Inside the truck, detectives found a loaded Smith & Wesson, .357 Magnum revolver, over 50 rounds of .357 ammunition and a speed loader, used to reloaded a revolver more quickly, a folding knife and a wooden handled steak-type knife. Police also located Edmond Brown’s proper New Jersey Driver’s License and other forms of identification which during the motor vehicle stop he claimed he did not possess.
Police later learned that Brown had a conviction which prevented him from possessing a handgun and was absconding from probation at the time of the incident.
The Haddon Township police officer’s use of force was investigated by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Division of Criminal Justice, and both concluded that the officer’s use of force was legally justified. As a result, no criminal charges will be filed against the Haddon Township Police Officer.
The entire incident was recorded on the officer’s dash board camera inside of his patrol vehicle, and was released for public view by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office on November 10, 2016.
Edmond Brown Jr. is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22, 2017 before Superior Court Judge John T. Kelley.
