Sicklerville Man Pleads Guilty in Camden Homicide – 3/31/15

Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson reported a Sicklerville man has admitted in court to fatally shooting a man in the city in 2013.

Clifford J. Stevens, 28, pleaded guilty on Friday (3/27/15) to first-degree aggravated manslaughter in the death of 27-year-old William Colbert of Camden.

Colbert was found lying dead on the ground near 16th and Pierce streets in Camden at approximately 9 a.m. February 18, 2013. He had been shot in the chest.

Within minutes of Colbert’s body being discovered, a hit-and-run motor vehicle crash was reported at 27th and Harrison streets, approximately 10 blocks from 16th and Pierce streets. The vehicle involved was a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu that had been rented by Colbert three days earlier.

A witness to the crash advised police that the driver, who was later identified as Stevens, was in possession of two handguns when he got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Police found Stevens hiding in the rear yard of an abandoned property on the 1200 block of North 28th Street, one block from the scene of the crash. He was in possession of a fully loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun and Colbert’s cellphone.

A second handgun was recovered in the area where Stevens was taken into custody. Laboratory testing by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) showed the second handgun was the weapon used to kill Colbert.

Under the terms of the plea, Stevens will be sentenced to 28 years in state prison. He will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He did not give a motive for the killing in court.

Stevens is scheduled to be sentenced May 8 before Superior Court Judge Michele Fox.

Released Tuesday, March 31, 2015.
